More about the ICIT

The Structure of the ICIT

The ICIT is deliberately loose and flexible in its structure, reflecting the Islamic movement itself. Although it is administered from Toronto, Canada, and London, in the UK, it has no formal base. Rather, the ICIT exists everywhere that members live and work, and everywhere that its work has an impact. Its activities are co-ordinated by Zafar Bangash, the Director of the ICIT, who is based in Toronto, and Iqbal Siddiqui, the ICIT's projects co-ordinator, who works in London.

Other senior members include Imam Muhammad Al-Asi, Imam Abdul Alim Musa, Dr Yusuf Progler and Mansour Ansari in the USA; Dr Maqsood Ali Siddiqi and Dr Basheer Nafi in the UK; and Dr Perwez Shafi and Shaikh Tajammalul Islam in Pakistan. The ICIT also has members and contacts in numerous Muslim countries, including Turkey, Egypt, Malaysia and the Arab states.

The Work of the ICIT

Publications-- The ICIT's work is primarily intellectual, and deliberately targeted to serve and promote the global Islamic movement. Muslim intellectuals who think and work within an Islamic framework, rather than accepting the western, secular framework of knowledge, are systematically discriminated against in the mainstream. This is particularly true in the social sciences, and particularly in politics and history. The ICIT provides a platform for such intellectuals to consider and discuss political and social issues from an Islamic perspective, and to publish their work.

Crescent International-- The Crescent International was converted to a twice-monthly 'newsmagazine of the Islamic movement' by Dr Kalim Siddiqui when he was Director of the Muslim Institute. Its first editor was Zafar Bangash, who is now Director of the ICIT. It is now edited by Iqbal Siddiqui. It is one of the major ways in which the ICIT conveys the ideas and perspective of the Islamic movement to Muslims around the world.

The ICIT Islamic Movement Discussion List-- The ICIT-IMDL is an e-mail discussion list moderated by Iqbal Siddiqui. It provides an on-line forum through which Islamic movemen activists and those interested in the Islamic movement all over the world can cirdulate news and discuss issues among themselves.

Conferences, Seminars etc.-- The ICIT is also committed promoting the Islamic movement, its worldview and its ideas in other ways, and to people who would otherwise not be aware of them. This it does through seminars, symposia, lectures, and courses. Such functions have so far been held in north America, Britain, South Africa and Pakistan.

Website-- Developing a major web presence is one of the ICIT's major priorities. The Internet enables many students, journalists and others to access materials which they would not otherwise be permitted to see in their countries. This website is presently under development. It is hoped that it will become a major resource and reference centre for Muslims everywhere, insha'Allah.
